First Offense
J.C. Rico
(CRCD-17)

Criminal Records is proud to re-release the stunning 1994 debut album by soul singer J.C. Rico and his Armed & Dangerous Band.

Rico was a force to be reckoned with. Armed with a powerful soulful voice, he landed in Portland, Oregon, in 1985, having spent his early years on the Mississippi Delta before landing in Chicago, ultimately making his way to the Pacific Northwest. Once in the Rose City, Rico joined forces with some all-star musicians to form the Armed & Dangerous Band and worked the Northwest, plying his “new generation blues” in front of packed nightclubs, concert halls and festivals.

Rico, with drummer and producer Paul Jones, hit the studio in January 1994, and emerged with an 11-song CD that captured his timeless blend of gospel power, soul grooves and blues influences.  Special guests included Lloyd “Have Mercy” Jones on guitar, Jim “The Italian Chainsaw” Mesi on pedal steel guitar, and Paul Brainard on extra guitars.

J.C. Rico’s untimely passing in 2011, after a move to Eugene, Oregon, and revitalization of his career, left a big void in the Northwest blues scene. This CD is a tribute to his special talent and larger-than-life personality, onstage and off.
